PS 20 KIDS' COUNCIL WAS ELECTED - Civics lives at PS20!

On election day, over 120 students privately voted, and each classroom elected two representatives to form the Kids Council. This group will help rethink how we can further increase the student-led civics focus of PS 20.

KIDS' COUNCIL MEMBERS ELECTED
4th grade Council Members
Lennon Watford/Jillian Maura, Serenity Jordan/Brianna Ahyoung, Noah Anderson/Khloe Wharton

5th grade Council Members
Ashaunti Mosley/Gianna Powell, Madison Taylor/Seoul Watson, Lea Cruz/Keira Biven

The Council meets each Thursday during lunchtime with Ms. Barbera and DK Holland of Inquiring Minds, a non-profit organization that offers democratic tools, processes, and programs that improve student engagement, self-reliance, and development.

Kids Council has been a program available to the upper grades of PS20 for five years as a tool to understand how children can effectively work together towards an agreed upon goal.

Each year has provided new revelations, including behavioral and self-esteem gains for both student participants and within the general class body. The experience demonstrates  that when students were freely engaged peer-to-peer to focus on a project, they can make big personal developmental advances that can extend to their peers. The Council is using a Learning Wall to compile ideas and thoughts.

Kids Council representatives will be on stage at monthly assemblies to share their plans with the entire school and ask questions to the student body at large, and students may speak with their representatives individually, too. They want to hear from all kids - including the younger ones! They are on a roll!

THREE PS20 YOUNG MUSICIANS ON THE RISE - JUILLIARD ‘MAP’ & ‘SALUTE TO MUSIC’ HERE WE GO!

It’s never too late to be proud of PS20 inspiring young musicians and to be thankful to our wonderful music teacher and PS20 Band director Mr. Hampton!

Congratulations to Kyra Hodges of 4-126 and Lillian Poline of 5-222 for their acceptance into the prestigious Juilliard Music Advancement Program (MAP)! A competition was held last May for young music students living in the Tri-state area, and their hard work paid off!
Through a comprehensive curriculum, performance opportunities, and summer study partnerships, Juilliard MAP students pursue advanced music studies while developing their talents as artists, leaders and global citizens.

Congratulations to Amina Brown who just got accepted to “Salute to Music NYC” program, through audition process. The Salute To Music Program, also known as Borough Wide Enrichment Program, has been going strong since its inception in 1956.

This program is partially funded by the non-profit organization Friends of Music and is a fully sanctioned program of the NYC DOE. Salute to Music provides an opportunity for students in grades 4 through 8 to receive choral and instrumental music instruction along with other students from their boroughs, culminating in concerts throughout the year.

Students have the chance to participate on Orchestral and Concert Bands, City-Wide Jazz Ensemble or the City-Wide Chorus.

Congrats to our amazing students and a big thank you to Mr Hampton, PS 20 music teacher and band director, for your tireless efforts to educate and support our young musicians.

We are proud to have all of you representing PS 20!

mosaic-logo (1).jpeg

Mosaic will be releasing a sneak peek of the new schedule next week, so check your email for updates.

Spring will bring some changes to the program, based on parent feedback and lessons learned since launching in September 2018:   “Pre-K only” classes - students will have their own, separate classes, with no more than 18 children per class with free time for supervised free play and activities - due to more staff needs it will cost $32 per day;  K-5th grade students will be able to remain engaged from January 6 to May 22 then teachers will be offering mini-month-long sessions (including outdoors) until school ends; There will be a 7% discount for enrollment in 5 or more classes in the same cart--including if those classes are for siblings in the same household.

Like last semester, scholarships will be need-based and awarded on a rolling basis. To apply for a scholarship click here. For more info - view Konstella. If you have any questions, please email mosaic@ps20.org
