PS20 Annual Brotherhood Celebration

Thursday, February 16, 2023

8:30am - 12:00pm

The Brotherhood Dinner at PS20 was started almost 20 years ago during Black History Month to promote family, unity, community, and to celebrate the African diaspora. By sitting down together at the table for a shared meal, the Brotherhood Dinner honors the diversity of our community and helps us to understand each other better as we work on achieving the same goals for all of our children.

This year, classes will be sharing their tributes to Black History and Brotherhood through performances, class presentations, poems and visual art. Parents are invited to join classroom presentations as well as share food and company in the Cafeteria.

BAND

Welcome! As we are preparing for our upcoming spring performances, what you will be hearing is a work in progress. The first audio song is a jazz standard titled "Sugar" and it features three fifth grade soloists, Nico DeWaters (saxophone), Marian Bagnulo (clarinet), and Phoenix Ross (trumpet). The second song is a Roberta Flack composition called "Killing Me Softly" which was made famous by the great vocalist Aretha Franklin. We are working on the rhythm for this piece.

Thank you and enjoy the brotherhood celebrations,
Mr. Hampton

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

As a celebration of Black History students in grades K-5 learned about the Brazilian martial art called Capoeira in Physical Education classes. As a Brazilian native I wanted to share my culture with the students as a celebration of diversity and Black History. Capoeira, an acrobatic martial art- disguised as a dance has its roots firmly in Africa. Now Capoeira as an art form is practiced all over the world. Its practice is about training the mind, body and soul and doing so as a community. What you will see in the video and picture montage are students across grades K-5 learning the basic moves in Capoeira and practicing with one another in PE classes. The students also got to see a live presentation of the Capoeira game or β€œjogo” and ask questions about the art form.

Have a wonderful time at PS20's Brotherhood Celebration.

Hope you enjoy,
Ms. Cassimiro
